Many have taken this part of this verse and used it to justify filling their lives with “stuff.” Sometimes you’ll hear it preached from the pulpit and TV and sometimes it’s used to make the poor seem like there is something wrong with their faith since they are poor.
The verse promises life and life more abundantly - life is about love, joy, peace, kindness, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness and self control - not “stuff!” But even more so - the whole verse says:
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” John 10:10 ESV
Jesus is contrasting the work of the devil with HIS work. It’s definitely not about “stuff.” The life of a Christ follower is full of trials and suffering, and love and joy unspeakable!
