God knows everything about us, and yet we have to invite Him into our hearts. He won’t come in to help and to cleanse unless we ask Him to - even though He can. That’s respect. That’s love. God called David a “man after His own heart,” and David teaches us how to invite God in:
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalms 139:23-24
This is the attitude of love, of discipleship, of following God and Jesus. It’s not about asking the Lord to help you do what you want, or asking for blessings or healing - you should ask for those things, but not before you’ve given Him full access to heart. That includes your hopes and dreams, and your fears and failings. Your whole heart. Then He shows your His will and purposes for your life and helps you along His path of righteousness. Then your hopes and dreams will align with His and He will help you overcome your fears and failings.
