Taking Up Your Cross

How many email messages, TV messages, or posts do you see that promote self-care? I see so many that I don’t even notice them as much anymore. Self care is important - but not as important as caring for our relationship with Christ. And sometimes He really does expect us to sacrifice our comfort or even *gasp* our safety to do His will. I’m not advocating for staying in abusive situations, though!

There is example after example of this throughout the Bible - He didn’t call us to comfort - He said, “Take up your cross and follow Me.” This meant ‘be willing to sacrifice everything and even die and follow me. “For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?” Luke 9:24-25

Following your heart is not following Christ - for the heart is deceitful and wicked and can’t be trusted (Jeremiah 17:9), instead, we must learn to follow the Word and the Holy Spirit to truly follow Jesus.
