It is SO EASY to fall into a “performance trap.” When we’re growing up we learn how to act and think by imitating others. This is good and natural, but as we grow we must learn to think for ourselves and decide what we’re going to do and how we’re going to act. This is when “teenage rebellion” happens - because the child goes to the extreme of not listening to or seeking wisdom from anyone but themselves. This is always a shame, but it’s also bad to just copy others in a search for acceptance when you’re an adult.
Yet, I’ve been in churches that not only encourage this, they look down on those who don’t comply - making you feel unwelcome and unspiritual, like you’re not a “good enough” Christian for their group. Christ wants us to seek Him for ourselves and within the Church. He wants us to follow Him not a denomination. He wants us to be obedient to authority, but Him first. He gave us gifts and talents designed to build up the body of Christ - the Church. If we aren’t offering them authentically, then we aren’t following Him the way He wants us to. If we serve so that we will be recognized then we’re not being authentic either. It’s all about the heart - is it after the approval of man, or if God. #godlooksattheheart #childofgod #calledandchosen #onespiritonechurch #discipleship #christianliving #dailydevotional #yourjourneytobeingwhole #shalom
